Dr. Maggs graduated from the M.B.Ch.B. University of Cape Town, South Africa in 1966. He afterwards served his internship in Medicine and Surgery at the Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, South Africa. He performed his residencies in Surgery at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Boston and at the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, Virginia. He served his residencies in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the Children's Hospital, Boston, and New England Deaconess Hospital, Boston. He has been Research Fellow in Transplantation at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Boston and in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Lahey Clinic Foundation, Boston. He is Board Certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

His main research interest is Computer applications to surgical practice. From 1986 he serves as Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at the Harvard Medical School. Dr. Maggs is a distinct member of numerous scientific and professional societies.
