Dr. Lucas graduated from the George Washington University School of Medicine, Washington, D.C. in 1961. He afterwards served his internship and his residency at the University of Wisconsin Hospital, Madison, WI. He then performed an Orthopedic Pathology Fellowship at the Alton Ochsner Medical Foundation, New Orleans, LA. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery with Subspecialty of Surgery of the Hand. His main areas of clinical interest include the Upper Extremities (Hands) and the Microvascular Surgery.

Dr. Lucas was Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Kansas, from 1984 to 1989. He has served as Professor and Chairman of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Kansas from 1989 to present. He has also been President and Chairman of Osteopathic Surgery at the University of Kansas, from 1989 to present. In 1984 he joined the Wichita Clinic, where he has worked from 1984 to present. He is on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Orthopedic Review.

Dr. Lucas is a member of many scientific and professional societies, including the: Sedgwick County Medical Society, Kansas Medical Society, Kansas Orthopedic Society, American Medical Association, Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons, American Association for Hand Surgery, American Society for Surgery of the Hand, Clinical Orthopedic Society, American Academy of Orthopedics Surgeons, American Orthopedic Association, Academic Orthopedic Society.
